I have a 3 year old laptop that only has 25GBs of memory. I want to increase the memory, but I'm not sure how to go about it. I know you can buy sticks of memory, some of them are 1GB, but how would I install it on my laptop? I've been told that you shouldn't open a laptop because, unlike a desktop, it can be damaged. Also, how much of an increase could my laptop handle and about how much does memory cost? Messing with the memory of a computer is something I'm completely ignorant about so any help, advice or tips would be greatly appreciated.

Most Laptops have a compartment underneath which houses the memory modules. To check what memory you need got to CRUCIAL and run the Memory System Scanner tool:

This is the official Dell 1GB memory module for your laptop. The price is steepy - try crucial.com.
Changing the memory module is relatively easy. This is how you do it. As always read the Precautions first.

25GB would be the hard drive space, not the memory. Judging from what you listed for CPU/RAM, you have 256MB memory.
You can't beat this deal on 1GB PC2700 200-pin SODIMM:

I think we need to know what you want to install. Is it memory (RAM) or is it a larger hard disk? Although the HD is a kind of "memory" it is not usually referred to as that.

It's the hard disk I'm trying to increase, but I guess RAM wouldn't hurt either.
Thanks for all the replies!

(Talking to self) ... A lesson for me - never again answer posts/threads/responses thats not well written with clarity & to the point ...

Fine, then the increase in RAM has already been covered in posts 1 to 3. It's a case of changing/adding memory sticks.
As for the HD then if you replace it with a larger one you will need to clone the existing HD onto the new one. Alternatively you can add an additional HD if there is space/facility. 25GB isn't too bad so it depends what you want to do on the machine.
As for the access and physical details I must leave that to other because I'm more familiar with PC's than laptops.

why not just buy an external hard drive that you can hook up to your usb port?

XpUser,
You're not alone. Geez, that's funny! :)
