Hello.
Hear is the strangest issue I have ever heard. Okay so I have a WD 160G external HDD connected to my computer via 2.0USB. My computers CPU idle temp is 91F when I turn on my external HDD my CPU temp jumps to 105F.
Now this is the strangest thing my machine does. My computer does sometimes BSOD or freeze but I don’t think there is any correlation between these two items. I am wondering if this is anything to worry about? Is there a bad connection between heat sink and processor? Bad thermal paste?
Thanks for any input because this is very odd.

As soon as you turn on you external hdd, the CPU gets a command to work. With my ssytem it takes 25% cpu usage. Plus, if you use the hd, it will keep on using the cpu which will create heat.
Also, does this happen excactly every time you turn on your external hdd. Maybe it's just a coincidence...?

If you keep having this problem, it would never hurt to re-install your heatsink. Just make sure to clean off all the thermal paste/pad leftovers and apply a very, very thin layer of paste.

About the BSOD problem, google the error code to see if the problem is related to your external hd.

A less than 8 degrees (in Celcius) rise in temperature is quite normal when you increase the CPU load from nothing to 25%

Wrong there, bucko! They are very related!

You can avoid many of these Windows problems with Linux. Linspire eases the transition for new users

Thanks.
The blue screen I always receive is 'system malfunction… please contact your hardware manufacturer…’ This BSOD gives no information about the problem. I may try resetting the CPU if becomes more of an issue. Also when I turn on the external HDD the CPU does rise reaching a max of 38% CPU usage but drops down to zero after auto play is down. Thanks for all your help. Feel free to share any more of your comments in light of last post. Thanks.
