Comment:

At 8 PM every night some program starts running in the background and really holds up my computer. Since it's not a start-up program, I have no clue how to find it. Can you help?

Thank you,
dotvta

control alt delete to get task manager running.

Could be a scheduled anti virus scan.

Task Manager or Windows Defender will help you identify what is starting to run at 8pm.

In Windows Defender, i think you want Tools, Software Explorer. In there you can choose what runs at startup, but you can also look at Currently Running Programs. pull it up a little before 8 one night and see what changes.

also, you're running Antivirus, right? AAAnd the definitions are up to date?

"Could be a scheduled anti virus scan."

I think Clive is correct. It's almost surely going to be a daily run of an anti-virus scan. They 'really' slow a system down.
