Impending processor failure?

Hi everyone,

My computer has slowed down dramatically lately, to the extent that innocuous activities like web surfing (via Opera) and word processing are excruciatingly slow. I've run numerous spyware and antivirus scans, and these show up nothing.

A peek at my BIOS reveals that there is zero info where the CPU data used to be -- only the CPU fan reading remains, and it reads at zero despite the fan visibly spinning.

Am I right in suspecting that the processor is heading towards failure? I'd like to get a well-priced Duron from TigerDirect, but I need to make sure that I'm replacing the right part. Any advice (including further diagnostic steps) would be very much appreciated!

I can just about guarantee that it's not a processor (CPU) problem. The first thing I would do is replace the motherboard battery.

I'll back ham30's guarantee....it's not the processor. Your machine is probably bogged down with a bunch of garbage. Start by downloading, installing & running CCleaner. And when you install it, make sure not to install Yahoo! spybar...I mean, toolbar ;-)

You can get CCleaner here:

http://www.filehippo.com/

Start by running the Cleaner, then Scan for Issues. Then click on Tools & under Tools, click Startup. Look over the startup list...my guess is that's where you'll find your "slowdown issue". If you can, post a screenshot of the startup list

Thanks everyone for the replies. I've downloaded CCleaner, and the screenshot is here:

Again, I'll be grateful for any other troubleshooting suggestions. This has helped to narrow the field a bit, I think.

Just to clarify. My suggestion about the motherboard mattery was for the bios problem, not the slowdown.

I've seen something similar happen on systems with HDDs that are heading south or some that have repairable errors, infected with foreign or malicious codes and also some with corrupted (video) drivers.

You are going to get to the culprit by a process of elimination. I would seriously advise you scan the drive for errors before anything else - might want to use a diagnostic tool from a disk manufacturer.

The following sites are a great help in determining which programs to stop from running on your system:

I was expecting to see a load of crap on the Startup list, but those entries 'appear' to be legitimate. All I can tell you is that not a single one of those entries turn up on my startup list, but that doesn't necessarily mean anything. I did some searching & here's what I found:

- CTFMON.exe is probably a legit entry for M$ Office, but it may also be a trojan.

"Note: ctfmon.exe could also be a process which is registered as a trojan. This Trojan allows attackers to access your computer from remote locations, stealing passwords, Internet banking and personal data. This process is a security risk and should be removed from your system."

It certainly wouldn't hurt to run a Trojan Remover, just to be sure.

- MsnMsgr is MSN Messenger. If you don't use it, it can be disabled. Even if you do use it, it doesn't HAVE to load at startup & can be run on an "as-needed" basis instead.

- IMJPMIG8.1, PHIME2002A, & PHIME2002Async all seem to be related to using Chinese, Japanese, & Asian characters. If you don't need it, they can be disabled. If you don't use them all the time, they don't HAVE to load at startup & can be run on an "as-needed" basis.

- AVG7 is obviously your antivirus program.

- IDW Logging Tool apparently is unnecessary & can be disabled. According to the following, it can cause slow network logons.
