Specs: Windows Vista
I've been using Samsun External HDD for almost a year now, it never caused any problems but now when I try to open it, it tells me to that I have to format the disc before using. I don't want to lose my files, so I don't want to format it without getting any advice, is there any way I can make it work? what could have happened to it?

I will leave the recovery issues to others.
But I will say this: You should always have a current backup of important data stored on any media. Hard drives fail, often without warning or apparent reason. And since external drives are sometimes subject to rough treatment they are generally less reliable than internals. Professional recovery of data from a failed drive is very expensive, often $1,000 US or more.

Some people maintain 3 or even more copies of particularly important data and keep them in different locations.

Might try something like photorec or testdisk to see if it can be recovered. There are other tools also.

Why did it take me over a year to phone in a problem to ATT?
