I have a pretty new laptop, which sometimes i use upstairs and other times downstairs. I always use the laptop on the main power supply in both cases, but when i use it upstairs i get a small but definite electrick shock by touching the side of my laptop. (Plastic Case).

This doesnt happen when im downstairs because im using the current directly, wheras upstairs i'm sharing the power socket with a TV, Radio, Playstation and lamp.

Is this normal?

When you get shocked is it only once like a static discharge or is it everytime you touch the side?

If it is everytime then it might be the wiring to the upstairs is hosed up. It's common to have electricians reverse polarities on outlets.

Static electricity comes from the presence of materials like plastic in your environment.Rugs and carpeting (just like the electronics have plastic enclosures etc.) happen to be made with nylon, polyester or acrylic plastics.Check the level of humidity in your room.It is possible it is too low particularly with cold weather. You could also try to install an antistatic surface under the chair where you work upstairs .Good luck.

static shocks from your laptop. not a good thing. sooner or later you may kill your laptop if you happen to touch it in the wrong place (like the connectors in the back).

does it develope this when it's just sitting there?

You could get an air ionizer that has a fan in it and blow it across the area where you use the laptop.
