Specs: Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium, 3 GHz / 2045 MB
I have 2 external backup drives that work either by usb or ieee 1394/firewire. I cannot get the pc to recognize either by firewire. I have 3 ports on the pc and none respond. I also have 2 pc's on Win XP and they do not respond there either.

Do I understand correctly that you have 3 firewire ports? Most unusual if so. Check in Device Manager to see if your 1394 controller is installed and working properly. If not, you may need to enable 1394/ firewire in the BIOS or supply hardware drivers for the controller.

Actually I have 4 ports. Very easy, use a card. I have 1394 enabled in the bios.

How do you supply drivers to the controller? Neither of the cases that I have the drives in had any drivers included except those for Win 98 etc. I was not aware that there were drivers for the controller. What I did was to buy the cases and then installed drives into them.

Thanks and I need to know about the drivers.

You may not need to supply any drivers if Vista has found the drive and configured it. If not then you may need to. That is why I suggested you check in Device Manager, or what ever it is called in Vista.

Also, I have never used on of those dual interface enclosures. Are you sure you don't need to do something more than just connect it?

If you need to supply a driver that would come from the card manufacturer or the 1394 chip maker.

What is the brand and model of your card? PCI or PCIe based?
