IDE HDD freezing my OS (XP SP3)

January 6, 2011 at 03:37:24
Specs: Windows XP Pro SP3, E6600 + 3GB DDR2
I recently put an old (but 100% working) IDE HDD into my PC, on IDE Channel 2 on my mobo. My OS boots fine, but then it starts hanging and then completely freezes up. I tried deleting all partitions and reformatting in Disk Management but it reached 100% then froze. The IDE cable is brand new and Asus branded so good quality. I have noticed this before on IDE channel 1 I have a Samsung CD-ROM optical drive as Master which now and again spins/lights up on the busy LED and freezes my mouse for a few seconds. So is there some IDE issue here?

Abit IB9 Mobo
E6600 CPU
1 x Samsung CDROM (IDE1 Master)
1 x Pioneer DVDRW (IDE1 Slave)
1 x Western Digital 500GB (Sata1)
1 x Samsung Spinpoint 320GB (Sata2)

---1 x Samsung Spinpoint 12GB (IDE2)

Running Windows XP Professional SP3
+Avira Personal Anti-Virus and Malware Bytes

So in brief:

IDE2 Port + Asus IDE cable + Samsung 12GB IDE HDD = freezing OS.

Any help would be great!

U have a lot of space, why use the old pata hdd? I believe that thing isn't even ata 100(if u use it for os it will be very slow). Go to samsung website and download a diagnostic soft to test the hdd.

Thanks for the reply, I'm using it for backup purposes, I won't it to remain totally isolated from OS/video/music/apps HDD's to store important documents etc.

The HDD is tested and working fine, I think it's a communication issue somewhere between cable and mobo or Bios...

Using an outdated 12GB HDD seems like a waste of time, especially since it's giving you problems. 16GB USB thumbdrives cost less than $20.

Hi Mick,

Thanks for the reply, so I guess there is no solution to this? Cheers anyway.
