IDE Hard Drive not recognized by Vista

April 17, 2012 at 15:44:04
Specs: Windows Vista, 4 GB
I've got a backup IDE hard drive in a USB sidecard. When I plug it into my HP Vista based laptop, I can see the drive as Disk 1 in Computer Managerment but shows it as "Unknown" and "Not Initialized". Has anyone been able to view an IDE drive in Vista?

Go to Disk Manager and see what it says there. If it is recognized there, it may just need a drive letter (if it shows as NTFS), or the drive may need partitioning and formatting (if it shows as raw) which you can also do there.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

I need to use the files on the backup hard disk on my HP laptop with Vista and also my work IBM laptop with Windows 7.

In disk management, the disk comes up as follows :

Disk 1
1098.53 GB 1098.53 GB
Not Initalized Unallocated

Now do I assign it a drive letter?
It doesn't show up as NTFS or as RAW.

If your disk shows as "Not Initalized" then the drive is corrupted. The MBR information is lost and windows does not know how to work with the drive. Did this drive get formatted on a Mac or a Linux computer? Is it a GUID disk?

Where did this drive come from and what was it used for? Was it always in your external USB enclosure or did you just put it there?

I've always had this hard disk in an enclosure. I could read it when I had a XP laptop but now I can't read it in either a Vista or Windows 7 laptop.

Can you still read the disk in a XP computer?

The sidecar or hard disk enclosure was the issue. I was able to get my hands on another sidecar and tested the drive in it on XP. It worked. I then tested it on Vista and Windows 7 and both systems recognized the drive.

Problem solved.

Thanks for all of your replies!
