Comment:

i have a digital 3100 system

when i connect two drives to the ide primary connector the bios picks both drives up no problem.
when i connect two drives to the secondary connector the drives work fine.

the problem is when i try to have one drive on primary ide connector and one on secondary. the secondary device will show up on startup but not the primary.

i am using two small 1 gig hard drives and a cd drive, all work fine. i have tested them all on one ide connector but i would like to install all three.

What happens when you put both HDD's on the primary and the CD on the secondary?

OK doc, here is two manuals that one of should answer your question. The first one is System Reference Manual. And the second one is a Service Maintenance Manual. It looks like the problem might be back in the BIOS. But I'll let you browse through the manuals. Good Luck!
