just curious how can you determine wether or not your HD is connect to 80 instead of 40 pin?

They're all 40 pin connectors, the wires are either 40 or 80. If you want to know if you have a 40 wire cable, count the wires (just count half and multiply by 2). If this looks like an overwhelming task, you probably have an 80 wire ;) Alot of 80-wire cables will have small print on it that will say if it's an ATA66/100. If it says ATA66 or above, it's an 80 wire.
