Icons and Taskbar Disappeared

I have a gateway, Windows XP, desktop. When the system reboots itself, the icons and taskbar appears and disappear twice until never reappearing. I have no idea why? I have installed spybot S&D and AVG and have found several infected files that I'm resolving, but is there anything else I need to do to resolve my problem?
