IBM Thinkpad R51 Will Not Boot

Specs: Windows XP Professional
I have an IBM Thinkpad R51. The other day it was working properly, then started to run slower than usual, and disconnected from the internet. So I restarted it, and it got to the first title screen, then the next screen was black with a blinking underscore in the top left corner. It just stays on this screen and doesn't get any further. The fan seems to be running, it just will not boot.

Is there a way to fix this?

The two possibilities that spring to mind are Overheating CPU due to blocked up cooling ports/fan, and failing hard drive.

I'm not familiar with that unit but I would recommend blow out the cooling vents with an airduster and if that doesn't help then try disconnecting the drive and boot up into BIOS to see if the machine can even get that far. This will help determine whether it is one of these two issues or something else.
