CPU/Ram: 900Mhz PIII
Product: IBM THINKPAD 2647
Comment:

I'm trying to put XP on my dad's old laptop computer. It's an IBM THINKPAD model, I can't find any model number info other than 2647 on the bottom. Anyway, I tried XP but it freezes during the "Installing devices" part of set up. So I thought i'd try and install 98 again and see if that worked, but sure enough, 98 also freezes during start up - I found out that this is because of the built in "Lucent WinModem". When I disabled this in 98's Device Manager, it all started up perfectly and worked fine. Thing is, XP freezes during the installation, because it's detecting the device.

Does any one have an idea of a way around this problem? Any help would be very much appreciated!

Cheers,

Alex

If you can enter Setup when you boot, you may be able to disable the modem in the BIOS, making it "invisible" to Windows.

Thanks for the reply.

I have looked in the BIO setup and unfortunately cannot find any settings to disable the modem, which I also found odd, being that it is an onboard device.

I've downloaded a BIOS update (the current BIOS is 1.07, the update is 1.12) to see if they may have added an option, but it doesn't seem to want to install.

I'm stumped!

Does it 'really' need XP (why)? How much RAM does the laptop have. If it's less than 512mb, win98 would be much better suited.

Hey Ham30,

It doesn't NEED XP, but you can't deny that XP is so much more user friendly than 98, one thing that I think annoys him is the needing of drivers for USB pen drives. This is not the case in XP, as I am sure you know.

Also, I don't buy the XP needs 512MB argument. I used to run XP just fine on 128 Meg. But I suppose it's down to opinion. The laptop has 256MB btw.

"one thing that I think annoys him is the needing of drivers for USB"

That's a good enough reason for me. I always had USB problems with Win98.

Have you tried installing Win98 and then doing a XP upgrade instead of a clean install. It's not the best way to do it, but ...

Hey again,

I'm now "installing" Win98 via the ghost image on the CD that originally came with the laptop.

When this has done, I have to got through this process:

Windows 98 will freeze upon boot. This was bugging me earlier because this is the first time I've ghosted 98 back onto the machine via the CD, so I just expected everything to work.

I then have to start Windows 98 in safe mode, goto Device Manager, and disable the Lucent Win Modem. When I reboot, Windows will operate fine. However, if I look in the properties of the disabled Modem in device manager, it clearly shows under "Resources" that there is a conflict with "Direct Memory Access Controller" - this must be the reason why it is causing the system to freeze when it is enabled, and therefore why any installation won't go. How to overcome this though, I don't know.

Does the BIOS have options to assigns IRQ's or toggle P'n'P O/S on/off ??

Dosser,

The BIOS seems to be very limited. The closest option I can find to the IRQs etc is the PCI INTA IRQ -of which there are 4 options. If I load the BIOS defaults, they all revert to the same IRQ. I have set them now as "Auto Select" which I assume means the O/S selects the IRQ, but not sure. I'll give XP another go now and see how I get on.

Cheers,
