Specs: Windows 7, 2.6ghz, 1 gb ram
I have a Think pad G40 type 2389 that I bought second-hand for $15.00
The ram installed right now is DDR 200pin sodimm PC2100 CL 2.5 266 mhz. (2 x 512 mb)

Has anybody been able to get this laptop working with 2gb? (2 x 1gb).

Looks like it can take PC2700 at 333mhz as well.

From the forums I've researched, looks like the official stated max ram is 1gb, but one user confirmed it working at 2gb.
I'm looking at getting two sticks of 1GB PC2700 DDR CL2.5 333 MHz and trying it. But before I spend the $, can anybody confirm that they've tried it and it works/doesn't work.

From everything I've seen, the max ix 1 gig. Don't waste any more money on it. It's old.

1GB is the max.

Install WinXP or a Linux distros such as Mint, I advise against Win7 on that old machine.

I found a 1 gb 200 pin sodimm in a laptop that was sent to recycling by our company, and I tested it. I put the 1 gb and a 512 stick in.

The laptop booted up and detected 1.5 gb of ram! Pretty cool.

That doesn't make sense. Either the model # you gave is wrong or the specs are messed up. Does it show in the BIOS?

It is indeed an IBM Thinkpad G40 Type 2389-W1E. It uses the Intel 82852 chipset.
The memory shows in the Bios and in Windows.

My suspicion was correct, Crucial.com is wrong (could it ever be?), and according to page 49 of the hardware maintenance manual I just now found,
http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pu...
it is documented that 2gb of ram are supported.

Memory (standard)
v 128 MB DDR SDRAM SO DIMM (PC2700) card × 1 v 256 MB DDR SDRAM SO DIMM (PC2700) card × 1 v 512 MB DDR SDRAM SO DIMM (PC2700) card × 1
Memory (optional)
v 128 MB DDR SDRAM SO DIMM (PC2700) card v 256 MB DDR SDRAM SO DIMM (PC2700) card v 512 MB DDR SDRAM SO DIMM (PC2700) v 1024 MB DDR SDRAM SO DIMM (PC2700)(maximum of 2048 MB)

I answered my own question. Kudos!
