Comment:

I have a IBM Thinkpad 600 running Win2K which has been dropped on the ground (while it was on) and is out of warranty. Screen is damaged but funtioning but the laptop itself does not work. When I looked at it the hard drive cover had partially broken open but now apparent damage was done other than the screen. When I fire it up it goes thorugh the BIOS setup but mentions this error before booting the hard drive:

DISK I/O ERROR 0001000

Then it Win2K fires up with the splash screen and I can get to the choose F8 for options part. After that it comes up with this error and goes no further:

*** stop: 0x0000007B (0x81428E10,0xC000009C,0x00000000,0x00000000) INACESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE

If this is the first time you have seen this Stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check for viruses on your computer. Remove any newly installed hard drives or hard drive controllers. Check your hard drive to make sure it is properly configured and terminated. Run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption and then restart you computer. Refer to your Getting Started manual for more information on troubleshooting Stop errors.

I have no manual, I have no new hard drives or controllers. I have no viruses (I assume). I cannot run CHKDSK /F because I am on Win2K. Also I have to make a bootable copy of Win2K as my current disk does not boot.

Can I fix this by booting with Win2K in the CD drive and formatting the HD or is my disk drive buggered? I ran all the diagnostic tests on the hardware by pressing F1 and doing into System Test and all the hardware was OK apparently.

Can anyine help or is the old faithful doomed.

Cheers
Blair

Sounds like the hard drive was damaged in the fall. You could try to reinstall or 'repair intall' Win2k (sorry I'm not too familiar with 2k to give instructions), but I would bet you need a new drive. Even if you get it to work again, it may not be reliable. The surfaces of the platters in the drive may have been scratched.

I know it sounds a bit buggered. I will try the format option with Win2K. Thanks for the opinion.

I looked in the 600 manual but it doesn't describe your error. I guess they don't expect you to drop your computer. You can download ThinkPad 600 manuals from:
