IBM R51 laptop won't shut down

February 4, 2011 at 03:54:21
Specs: Windows 7, 1.50

I have an R51 Thinkpad laptop, and it won't shut down! It is to be stuck in a continual loop of restarting. Am running Windows 7 Pro and have recently upgraded the RAM to 1.5GB.

Any advice would be great!

Try removing the battery to force it to power off. Then replace the battery and try again. If it repeats, remove the new RAM (after powering off!) and see what happens.

thanks, but unfortunately neither has solved the problem.

removing and replacing the battery made no difference; we have 1GB RAM inside the laptop, with the (original) 0.5GB installed in the slot on the back (sorry, I'm not that techinally experienced to know the correct terms!). have removed the 0.5GB RAM, but the laptop now just freezes with 'Shutting down...' showing on screen. I have to press and hold the power button to bring it back to life!

anything else i can try...?

You say that you have removed the 0.5GB (original) RAM. I was suggesting that you remove the new RAM (the 1GB) as it is possible that it is faulty. Or do I misunderstand you?
