Can anybody help? I have an IBM thinkpad type 2645 that creates error codes 00178 and 00188. I have seen this is caused by EEPROM problems but how can I fix the problem?
Many thanks in advance
Ben

Did you check on IBM's web site for the answer? You would have to replace the eeprom that is bad on the motherboard as far as I can see. Unsoldering and resoldering. Only a IBM tech should do this.

It would be SO dam handy if you people would post more info:

What is the MODEL and TYPE number?

Do you have the maintenance manual?

Have you been to IBM, and read any of the tons 'o stuff there?

This appears to be a 600E?

Here's the maintenance manual, which lists error codes:

ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/pc/pccbbs/mobiles/09n1033.pdf

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=ibm&lndocid=LWIK-3SYPX2

You may very well have something serious, but before I condemmed the thing, I'd pull the bios battery, make SURE to read the maintenance manual, and do a "hard reset" of the system board.

Then, pull out ALL or ANY extra memory, and ALL drives (swap bay and hard drive) and see if the basic chassis posts. You will probably have to "reset" some things in bios, but it should at least "post" and whatever errors it shows should be consistant with no cdrom, floppy, or hard drive.

Frankly, for no more than these are getting to be worth, I'd look for a good "chassis" with a faster motherboard (600X or the infamous "speedstep") I'd think you could buy one with a trashed display pretty cheap on eFray.

Here's some examples, I have nothing to do with these sellers, just for info:

I don't know how ANYONE could repair one cheaper than this:

Thank you for your help. whilst i have looked at the documentation online, it is always helpful to have comments from others on the situation.
Sorry i did not have further info but the bottom of the laptop is well worn and I could extact little more info without dismantling the computer.
Thankyou for the assistance Ben
