I have a 5150 with two 5.25" Floppy Drives(one Tandon and one Magnetic Peripherals) with 640K memory and color monitor. When I try to boot it up I get a 1701 error code (hard drive problem) and the system doesn't have a hard drive. All DIP switches have been set properly. The start up disk is inserted in A-drive (the B-drive doesn't seem to be active at all), and it begins to work, but dies after a few seconds, then the Basic screen appears, and any attempt to load DOS through the "system" command fails. Any ideas what my problem could be?

Does your IBM think it has a hard in bios?

You have a classic there. Does a ctrl-C do anything?

I'd first check the CMOS for the correct drive settings (both hard drive and floppy drive settings). Just curious...what are you using a 4.75Mhz computer for? Never mind, I just remembered what my neighbor uses a similarly slow system for.

Yes, I think you're right, BIOS thinks it has a hard drive, but it doesn't.How do I get into CMOS from Basic to tell it what it has?

Ctrl-C doesn't solve the problem.

Borelli34:

How do I get into CMOS from Basic? I can't get any kind of DOS prompt. Could it be a controller card failure or a floppy drive failure? Oh, by the way, I collect and repair vintage computers as a hobby. 4.77Mhz is a little slow for today.
