Comment: Hi I want to upgrade my PC so I can install 5 IDE drives - DVDRW,DVD,CDRW,120G HDD + 2nd HDD.I would like the 2nd HDD to be in a caddy, so I can swap it for another. I am into Movie making at the mo, and am running out of HD space constantly. Normal Mobos don't have enough IDE connections, so can anybody tell me what Mobo I would need ? Do I need a RAID Mobo?(whatever that is) If it is not possible, why do they sell 4 bay cases ?! Cheers Robert

Reply: (edit)They sell four bay cases because four IDE devices is the standard - you want five. You could install a RAID (Redundant Array of Inexpensive Disks) controller. Before you do that I would read up on RAID. Some RAID controllers do not like working with CD/DVD burners. A better solution would be to install a PCI IDE controller. This will be cheaper than going out and buying another motheboard. Stuart

Reply: (edit)Another possibility, if your mobo has the ports, is USB. This is for removable devices such as printers, scanners, cameras and hard drives. You can get a case for your HD at Tigerdirect to let you use it on a USB port. (Other places have them, too.) Good luck, and I hope this helps!

Reply: (edit)External USB connected drives are an option as well as easily swappable. http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.asp?DriveID=60 Jimi_l

Reply: (edit)Thanks Stuart ! I think you are right about the PCI IDE card - I didn't know there was such a thing, but I have checked it out, and am sure it will do the job for me, at a fraction of the cost. Cheers !

Reply: (edit)Most definitly go with a PCI IDE controller card. USB drives are more expensive and slower. Get a card for under 30$ can yer off and rolling again.

Reply: (edit)If you have an empty 5-1/4 inch drive bay you can add a removable hard drive rack to make drives removable. These include a rack that mounts in the bay and an inner tray to mount the drive. Additional trays may be purchased for each drive you want to swap with the first. Here ar some examples: IDE Removable Hard Drive Racks http://www.directron.com/mobileide.html
