Hi,
I have a small (40GB) HD and I want to add a bigger one for storage. I also have a DVD Recorder and a DVD drive. Could you tell me how to connect them in terms of Master,Slave and Primary IDE, Secondary IDE ??

Thanks a lot

Any way you like.
Existing HDD primary master. DVD drive Primary slave. DVD Burner Secondary master and new storage drive secondary slave.
Any other configuration will also work

I used to have a signature but it disappeared and I just couldn't be bothered writing another so please feel free to ingore this.

The point of interest is separating drives/devices that will be working simutaniously.

Such as: Burning a DVD from data stored on the master hard drive to the DVD burner on the separate channel.

In my own configuration: My Video editing application runs on my primary master so I save it's output on the secondary slave drive.
I burn the movies from the secondary drive to the DVD burner on the primary slave.

In truth, mine is not setup like the above because my drives are SATA devices where my DVD reader and DVD writer drives are IDE, but if they were all IDE then they would be set up as described above. (My older Win98 PC that has CD Reader and a CD Writer is set up as noted.

The idea is that you want the data transfers to go from one channel to the other when in use as it is faster than going out and back into the same channel.

The most efficient set up would be dictated on how the owner plans to utilize all of the drives and devices.

In general: Separate like devices and drives.
Slave versus Master is not important. It is only used to identify where the devices are located.

Good avice from Bryco. For maximum speed, you want the devices that you transfer data between the most, on separate cables.
