I have a Novatech PC with XP. Now when I switch on it just bleeps and keeps accessing the floppy drive. I have put other HDDs in and the same happens. I have removed and replaced most parts and reset the CMOS jumper and taken out the battery for 15mins. It did intermittently do this for a while but now always does. Has my motherboard blown or maybe a new battery would help?

Hi, Try again. 15 min may not be long enough for your MB. 2-3 hours may be more like it. Jim

Disconnect 'all' the drives and see if it will boot up. You don't need a hard drive for it to come up with a display.

"just bleeps and keeps accessing the floppy drive"
Did you try to update the bios just before this happened? If so, the flash has failed, either because something went wrong while flashing, or you used the wrong bios update. You can recover from that in some circumstances if the floppy drive can still be accessed.
Did you just install ram in this mboard that wasn't it it before? - if so, take it out, put the old ram back in if applicable. If you try to use ram that is incompatible with your mboard, in the worst cases the mboard will not boot.

If you didn't do either of those, the most likely thing is your power supply is failing - this is COMMON.
How do you tell if the PS is malfunctioning or dead?
The best way is to borrow a known good PS and try it, or try your PS in a working computer.
If you can't do that....

If the computer or PS will not start......
Sniff the PS fan outlet area with the power off - a strong burnt wiring / burnt plasticy smell indicates the PS has been overheating or has been malfunctioning, regardless of whether the PS fan is spinning properly.
Try turning the PS fan from the back of the case with a pencil or something slim - it should move in jumps, but be easy to turn - if it is hard to turn, the fan has stopped, the PS has overheated and fried itself, and the PS has died.

If that seems okay, open up your case and check the cpu fan - if it does not spin, if it is difficult to turn, the cpu fan has stopped turning, and the cpu has probably overheated to the point it is now dead. You can remove it and try it connected to another computer if in doubt.

Ram extremely rarely goes bad spontaneously, and if you have more than one module it is next to impossible for more than one to fail at the same time. Don't bother to try different ram - the ram that was in it in the first place is probably fine - randomly trying ram will not necessarily prove anything - whether ram works in another mboard does not necessarily mean it will work in this one, unless the other mboard is identical, or sometimes, the other mboard has the same chipset. Every mboard has some ram that will work in it fine, and other ram you think would work but it does not because it is incompatible with the mboard. If you try to use ram that is incompatible with your mboard, in the worst cases the mboard will not boot.
