Yes but the amount of data you get back is questionable, did it save your data in a windows.old file (check the hard drive for that file). Otherwise those situations are a difficult recovery, not hopeless, just limited.

Every thing added to the hard drive in the way of installing software and files decreases the odds.

The way to be sure is to first have a set of restore disks for your unit. Then format the hard drive using FULL format. Then use the restore set to re-install everything.

This will not insure no one can recover anything but makes it less likely. Be sure to provide the restore disks with the laptop.

There are programs that can wipe the drive more thoroughly.

Just a point to mention. If you keep sensitive data on your computer you are always at risk. The unit might be lost or stolen or you may be hacked. Best to not store things you can't afford to have other gain access to. Bank and credit card access come to mind.

I don't store any passwords on my hard drive. I don't let many passwords be saved. The ones I do are not going to cause me to lose money or my identity.

You can purchase a recovery disk set from the manufacturer of the machine.
You can use an aftermarket partitioning/formatting program to format the hard drive.
You can use the recovery disk set to restore the operating system, drivers, and included programs. Then it is wise to update Windows and install a free antivirus program like Avast or MS Security Essentials.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

Then you can still make the restore disks. You are allowed to make 1 set so don't mess it up. Use AC power when making the disks. Click on the link below to learn how to make them.
