i need these ports for school

Specs: Windows 98, 501 mhz / 192 mb
I have a ASUS usb/mir Rev.1.11 usb board in my windows 98 machine and the two usb ports both provide power (ie. To charge an iPod) but will not transfer data. As well if you go into control panel and systems the systems viewer does not recognize the existence of the port. Also with these ports one day they worked fine and then I turned the computer off for the night and the next time I went to use the usb ports they did not work.

Is this an add on card?

If so maybe it is not properly seated the the slot.

no it is the card that came with the computer. And the way it is conected to the mother board is not a direct slot like the sound card, it goes through a short piece of ribon cable to the mother board. So i dont think it is a seating problem, becasue i have already tried re and dis conecting it.

Is it one of those combination ps/2 mouse port, IR port and USB mobo connections?

The fact it shows power doesn't mean it's working or even good. Check in cmos/bios setup and see if there's an option to enable/disable USB.

If everything's enabled but the ports aren't detected then just assume they're bad and buy an add-on card. If you're running 98 SE you can get a USB 2 card, just make sure the necessary drivers are supplied.
