Hi all hope someone can help me sorry for the long post lol

I been getting help in one of the other forums for a spyware infection, I was asked to run Check Disk which I did first by going to my computer, the drive, properties, tools, ect ect ...... anyway when I clicked “schedule disk check” nothing happened laptop didn’t restart ? Even if I manually restarted check disk doesn’t start I just restart as normal

Next I tried to run check disk in safe mode from the command prompt using “chkdsk C: /f”

Click enter

“The type of file is NTFS. Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process, would u like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts? <y/n>”

Which I choose y by typing y and enter

“This volume will be checked the next time the system restarts”

The check disk never runs though, this could be for two reasons though one I don’t know how to turn command prompt off other than the “X” top right, then there is no way to restart safe mode other than holding down the laptop off button

Firstly could someone tell me where im going wrong with command prompt/safemode shutdown thing

I did run sfc /scannow and windows resource protection found corrupt files on C: ...... but was unable to fix some of them

Plus I can locate the cbs.logs but I can’t zip them see them or move or copy them access is denied, is that just vista been stupid why can’t I even see or post the logs

Thanks Webb

If you want to close a command prompt window type EXIT and hit enter.

I can't remember off hand but if you're booting to command prompt via the F8 menu, try EXIT or CTRL-ALT-DEL. If that doesn't work I guess you hold the power button down until it shuts off.

Likely part of it is due to the other problems you're having with the spyware.

Hi again “exit” closes the window ok thanks, but didn’t make the program run?, but when I typed shutdown it reamed of a lot of stuff at the command prompt and when I restarted the check disk program worked

However this has never been repeated in successive attempts, so maybe it was just luck, I cant find or more apt don’t know what I am looking for, in terms of a log the program would have saved ? Any ideas

Also back to the CBS.logs I still can’t open them access is denied
I tried using cmd.exe as an administrator from the start menu to open them with see link below but was told they could not be opened,

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928228

So I tried the above link in safe mode with the command prompt same result though

“FINSTR: cannot open c:\windows\logs\cbs\cbs.logs”

Also I installed “take ownership” from the vista support forums but even that can’t open the files, although it does say u have to have to be logged in as a administrator which i am not, because I cant so far create a administrator account, I am beginning to wonder if I should just reformat the drive

Thanks Webb

You may need to. Or you could try posting in the XP forum first and see if they have any other ideas.

Oh, yeah, I don't know why I was thinking XP. Go ahead and post in the Vista forum then. They might be able to help, but be prepared to do a fresh install.
