Subject: I just don't know what to do nemoreOS: Win98seCPU/Ram: PCChips M810lr v3 motherb |
Comment: My computer specs: PCChips M810lr v3 motherboard - AMD Duron 800 CPU - 256RAM (two sticks of 128) - 30gig Seagate hard drive - 400watt PSU - GeForce MX420 video card - Sound Blaster Live 5.1 X-Gamer sound card - DVD rom - CD r/w - floppy drive anyway, I REALLY think I just had faulty hardware...I have been having these SAME problems since I bought the computer two years ago...it was bought used at a going out of business sale from the showfloor as a demo...I dunno...
here are my problems... (random illegal operations, windows protection errors, restarting for no reason even if I am just staring at the computer, sometimes errors "during" windows 98se installation (rundll or blue screens) after formatting. I can be typing this message and my IE or Netscape will just close for no reason several times an hour. I have formatted my hard drive about 30 times since buying the computer (seriously 25-30+ times) two years ago, I get these errors a few times an hour...adding another error: during windows 98se installation MSGSRV32 white box error...) .........so......... I reformatted my c: drive (I have all of my important files backed up on my d: backup drive and e: chris (personal) drive....I reformatted so I could get a fresh install again...I say again because I must have reformatted this drive at least 25 times due to these problems (and running out of space)...since buying the computer two years ago...NOW I am having problems I have NEVER had before...I get to the windows 98se installation.....after typing in my win98se cdkey and pressing enter, I get a fatal exception 06 blue screen error...I checked the microsoft.com support center and they said this error is usually caused by norton anti-virus (isn't Norton AV the cause of everything these days? =))....anyway...I formatted my hard drive, so I don't even have norton on my computer....this blue screen caused the installation to freeze with blue scanlines on the screen and I had to restart...when I was able to luckily make it past this blue screen earlier, I was stopped by a MSGSRV32 white box error...I just don't know what is wrong and couldn't get to the desktop and had to restart and format again... I have upgraded my sound card from onboard to PCI (Sound Blaster Live 5.1 X-Gamer)...my video card from onboard to PCI (GeForce MX420), my memory from one stick of 128, gave it to my sister, then got two sticks of 128RAM totalling to 256, and recently my PSU from "300" (yeah right) to 400 watts...AAAAAHHHHHHH!!!! could the fact that the computer was bought off of the showfloor as a demo computer...meaning it had been used a lot...at a going out of business sale for $600 (2 1/2 years ago)..mean faulty hardware? I have tried to install windows 5 times today...I was able to finish the installation even THROUGH the errors at one time, but then windows wasn't running stable and I was getting errors right at the desktop....so I formatted again...now I keep formatting and trying to install it...I don't know what to do.... M810LMR version 3 DVD rom drive CD r/rw drive floppy drive two sticks of 128 ram = 256RAM AMD Duron 800 processor hard drive 30gigs (27 gigs after windows installation) - partitioned C: 21gigs D: 2gigs E: 4gigs cooler master fan and heatsink 400watt PSU (recently bought and installed) windows 98se (too many paged fault problems and windows protection errors with Win2000 and Winxp, so I have been sticking with win98 all of this time)... I just can't take this anymore...my sister just told me a min ago I should write a letter to my scholarship organization to see if they could send me my $2000 early (before late August) to build a computer....anyway... help is much appreciated...I am on my sister's computer right now and going crazy...that is why I am rambling like this...oik, I am done..!!!!! no I am not done...just made it past the cdkey fatal exception 06 error screen.,...BUT, when installation was continuing (the part that says "restarting" and it counts down 15 sec before it restarts....I get a blue screen with fatal exception 0E...of course Microsoft says it is a conflict with Norton Anti visus...but did you ever think about this Microsoft? NOT EVERYONE HAS NORTON!!!!..so I can't even install windows on this computer...
AAAAHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!! ok, I put my hard drive into our old home computer, installed windows 98se on it from that computer without problems...I put the hard drive BACK into the computer I have been having problems with...but it froze during scan disk, it froze at the loading windows screen, and then I was able to get to the windows login where I get a blue screen fatal exception OE VXD VMM(01)....but there is nothing on the hard drive but win9se...clean installation....so obviously something with this computer is screwed up.... anyone, please help? (sorry if this sounds confusing, but I wrote most of this a couple of days ago when having problems, and now I am still trouble shooting problems and trying various things)

Reply: (edit)I had the same problem with a friends PC. I reinstalled Windows through the errors and ended up with two Windows directories and the thing still froze.... It turned out to be the modem giving the problems, even though I did not have the modem connected to the telephone jack. I took the PCI modem out, reinstalled Windows and everything was great... till I put the modem back in... I read on this site in this situation to disconnect anything that is not required eg soundcard, printer etc then install Windows. If everything works, connect things one at a time, testing between fittings. Good luck

Reply: (edit)Well, I did try to install Windows 2000, but got blue screen errors during installation and couldn't continue. A few months back when I was NOT having this problem and I had Windows 2000 installed, all I got were non paged fault errors. When I had XP installed a few months back, my computer kept restarting several times an hour. So I went back to Windows 98se. Since I did replace my memory with a new stick a couple of days ago and STILL got the errors, I don't think it is the memory. Something on my motherboard may be messed up? I installed Windows 98se on my hard drive today BUT that hard drive was hooked up to a different computer. Then I put the hard drive back into my faulty computer and got errors at the windows login screen and I was never able to log into windows. So I KNOW it is not a hard drive problem. About disconnecting anything not needed, I disconnected my PCI sound card and PCI video card and it still didn't work. I have not disconnected the modem though which is using this long looking AGP slot (looks longer than an AGP slot?).

Reply: (edit)What you are experiencing is very typical of a bad stick of RAM. It starts with only certain addresses that crash when accessed, and gradually gets worse and corrupts other addresses as the crashes repeat. Go to Best Buy and buy one stick of RAM; pull both the ones you have, and substitute the new one. Power up. If you still crash, move the stick to another slot, and power up again. If your BSs disappear you have your answer. If you still have problems, you can return the RAM for a full refund. The reason that I suggest a fresh stick is that by a chance of unkind fate both your sticks may be faulty due to the repeated crashes you have experienced.

Reply: (edit)I agree with a hardware issue- Remove ALL accesory cards(NIC, modem, sound) Try the install... Download the diagnostics for the hard drive from the drive Mfg's site and run it. Try the install.... Bum a stick of RAM (or buy one), remove your originals and insert the new one. Try the install.... Throw the PC chips mobo in the river. WON'T help the install but is a start in the right direction.... Jimi_l

Reply: (edit)I had the same problem with a pc chips board I probably reloaded the dam thing 20 times myself exactly the same as you described Mine turned out to be the power supply even after I put a 400 watt new one in I had to put a smaller wattage in,it has a 350watt. That same computer has been running now for over a year with no problems. By the way The 400 watt ps has been running fine ever since in my new comp I built so there must have been a problem with ps somehow and the old comps mobo I guess

Reply: (edit)I ran memtest already and had over 400,000 errors on one stick after 7 hours of testing...the other stick had over 700,000 errors after only 4 hours of testing and someone told me I might as well cancel the test and get new RAM... I did go down to PC Warehouse located here in CT and I bought ONE stick of 256RAM (yes, I did take out BOTH of my old RAM sticks and ONLY put in the new one). That did NOT help my problem as I got the SAME errors in the SAME places during installation of the OS. That is why I have a feeling it is not the RAM. Plus I was able to install an OS on my hard drive when I connected the hard drive into ANOTHER computer of ours. Then when I tried to run the OS BACK onto the problem PC, I got errors again and couldn't load the desktop. About the power supply, it didn't work with the new 400w PSU I have and then I put my old PSU back in and that didn't work either. Just got the SAME errors in the same places (as well as occasional freezing and restarting during installation).

Reply: (edit)had the same problem before(msgsrv32)... i found out that the soundcard was causing it. Might as well try installing without the soundcard, and better yet, without anything except the basics. (cpu/fan, mem, hdd, video)

Reply: (edit)the river looks like the best place for your mobo. this would be a very long shot, but a run on mobo could be makeing contact with the case. take the mobo out of case and lay it on a non condutive surface, hook everyting up and give it a try.

Reply: (edit)As a user of a PC CHIPD M830 LR, I have to say that the mobo is your culprit. When you get the same errors in the same place with different memory, that tells you it's the mobo. I have never heard anything good about PC Chips, so I am waiting for mine to get weird. But so far, it has performed flawlessly. It sounds as though yours has been defective since you bought it. I put up with a flakey Biostar mobo for two years before I tossed it out. I must have reinstalled 98 at least 25 times. I went to a Dell and nowe the PC Chips and haven't had any problems. Any brand can be defective. There are literally thousands of places where a mobo can be bad, one small etch short can realy mess it up. Get a new board, Tyrant and stay away from PC Chips.

Reply: (edit)I must concur with PCBob. In fact, as I was giving you my last suggestions about pulling the RAM, it was constantly going through my had that the board might be dodgy. If you are interested, the Shuttle AK39N board at Newegg is $63 + shipping, and you get a lot for your money. I just completed my second unit using it, and it is a fast, rock-stable board. In the Shuttle/Yahoo forum, I haven't seen a complaint yet about the 39N since it was released a few months ago. http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduct.asp?submit=manufactory&manufactory=1465&catalog=22&DEPA=1&sortby=14&order=1
