Does all the ram show on the posting screen or the bios setup page? If not you may have a bad ram stick or slot. If it came with 2 sticks of 256 meg you might try swapping them and see if you can determine which is bad.

When working inside the case make sure the power cord is disconnected.

Dell computers have a thing called AGP Aperture in the BIOS. Essentially it gives the specified RAM to an AGP card (or the integrated graphics) if the card's onboard RAM fills up. I think it could be that your setting is 256 MB, thus reducing your RAM. Check for the setting in "Integrated Devices" in the BIOS. You could lower it as much as you want, but I would recommend 128 MB.

You've been helped by a 14 year old.

That's not exactly the way AGP aperture works; that is, it doesn't immediately grab all the ram set for the aperture and dedicate it for video so I don't think that's a factor here. But yeah, for most modern systems, aperture of 256 meg is probably too high, unless they've added a really crappy AGP card.

I thought maybe they were using the on-board controller and it was a shared memory issue but from what I could find the maximum amount of shared memory for the gx280 is 128 meg:

In BIOS disable OS Install Mode.
