Comment:

This morning I started up and saw that the colors on my monitor weren't right. It didn't appear that I had any red and some other colors aren't right. Things that I know are red are black and faces are greenish. I've tried the DeGauss, but that didn't work. The colors came back to normal for a couple of hours, but the problem has returned. I have a Compaq MV700 monitor and I operate using Windows ME. Any help would be really appreciated. Thanks

is your VGA connection properly connected?? sometimes when your vga connection is not right, it only shows some colors. I dont think a DeGauss will solve your problem. Its more of an monitor problem. Just make sure your vga connector (from monitor to pc) is properly connected.

Yep, sure, as per #1 it's not a degauss symptom and monitor is most likely.

You could try wiggling the signal connectors and leads just in case the red line is playing up and there is some way to fix it. Often "tapping" around (lightly) can locate intermittent faults.

Less likely, but possible, is a display card problem. If nothing else is obvious then clean it's edge connectors wth a pencil eraser and pop it in and out of the socket a few times in case there is some tarnish about.

.. I cleaned and re-connected the cables and so far the colors have not returned! Would you guys have any other ideas? It's odd that I had this problem this morning and everything returned to normal for a couple of hours then the problem returned! I'm stumped!

That's the way of intermittent faults. Sit tight and see if it arises again. If it stays OK, then it's just a matter of how long you need to gain confidence that it is really cured.

If it does happen again then it would be worth checking that card as advised.

Well ... the problem just may be the power cord! I disconnected and cleaned the cables and it didn't make a difference, when I pulled the power cord off, cleaned it and re-connected it, the red colors were flickering. When I disconnect and re-connect the power cord the reds return and disappear again. Have you ever heard of the problem being the power cord? If this keeps up I'll go purchase a new power cord. I didn't think power cord's could just go bad like that. If that's what the problem is, I'll be happy. I'm assuming the monitor isn't shot, I hope! Thanks all. If you have any further comments, fire away!!

No, that cord only supplies overall power and cannot affect any particular color.

My take is that it just disrupted whatever fault you have/had (surged it) which is why it came and went again.

IF it is a lead or connection it has to be due to the signal lead not the power lead.

.. I had a feeling that was the case, but when I unplug the power cord from the back of the monitor and re-connect, the red colors return, then fade away, maybe that's resetting the monitor? I honesly don't know WHAT'S going on there. I have red colors right now and I hope they stay. If you have any other ideas as to what it could be, please let me know. Thanks, Derek.

CRT monitor= not worth repairing. The fault is somewhere in the signal connection. either in the signal cable itself or where the cable terminates inside the monitor. Your other statement about the red "fading away" indicates the fault may be in the red cathode gun.

In any event replacement of the monitor is the only financially sensible outcome.

I used to have a signature but it disappeared and I just couldn't be bothered writing another so please feel free to ingore this.

I'm not quite clear what is past and what is still happening.

If you are "still" getting the red colors returning and fading when you unplug and reconnect the monitor power then it looks much more like it is the monitor itself, rather than cables/connectors or display card. If this is the only time you get trouble then stop doing it and see how you get on.

If the fault is now more solid (ie less intermittent) then the only way to get 100% proof is to either try your monitor on someone else's machine or theirs on yours.

If it is only from time to time then, as with all intermittent faults, it is more tricky to get conclusive proof.

Thanks guys, I've lost the red colors again after having them all day! Could something be disrupting the monitor? I wish I knew why the red colors are coming and going, it was fine all day? The unplugging and re-connecting of the power cord is no longer working. This morning the red colors jusr re-appeared on their own and lasted all day, then they went poof? I know it appears that a new monitor is the way to go, but it's not feasible right now. If there's nothing else to try, I'll re-do some of the things we have tried. Thanks for your help, I really appreciate it!

"Could something be disrupting the monitor?"
Nothing from the outside world would produce those symptoms if that's what you mean.

Monitor or possibly signal connections remain my best guess.

.... The reds popped on this morning and have stayed! I don't know what's up, but if it happens again, I'll check out the signal connections again!! After that, a new monitor is in store! Thanks again.
