Hello, I have recently purchased the Ricoh RW5120A 2.4x DVD+RW Drive and I cant get it to burn DVD discs. I first purchased DVD-RAM rewriteables and when I place them in the drive the disc only spins and is never ready. So I figured that the drive doesnt support DVD RAM discs so I puchased some DVD-RW discs and the same thing. I am using Nero Burning software and all it shows is "waiting for drive to become ready" but it is never ready. What is the problem? Thanks

Just wondering why you'd buy non-compatible media and expect it to work? From the manual: "This drive is NOT compatible with DVD+R, DVD-R, DVD-RW, and DVD-RAM media". You must use ONLY DVD+RW disks.

check device manager and see if the device is working correctly. What do you have it cabled to? What is its setting [master/slave]?

"waiting for the drive to become ready" typically means that Nero doesn't have the correct driver(s). Check their website to see if there are known issues for your burner and their software. If Nero was bundled with your burner, then uninstall everything and start over using the install boot disk option from the setup cdrom.

As wanderer said, also check winders for proper operation. DVD/RW drives can be listed as cdrom drives that are working, so beware of that.

He purchased the DVD - RW, not the DVD+RW. there is a difference in that standards. The + and the - is the difference. Thats why I always suggest buying the more expensive dvd writers like the plextor 708A or the Sony DRU510A which are capable of writing to both.

Wow really? Is that the problem then? Man why are there so many different types. Thanks for the responses

There are two different types of standards, + and -, because when dvd writing first was introduced to consumer level devices, their was a difference of opinions on what standard to use. So Sony developed a standard to use for their devices, and Phillips developed a standard to use for their devices, and everyone else kind of fell into one category or the other. At the time DVD drives could only choose between one or the other. For awhile there has been some debates as to which standard should become the dvd writing standard, because no one can agree. The whole point should soon be less important though, because companies are finally beginning to make drives that can write to dvd+r,dvd-r,dvd+rw,dvd-rw,cd-r,cd-rw, and read dvds and cds (8 way compatibility) so that you can use pretty much any media in them and get results. Like i said earlier, the sony dru510A was among the first drives to become available to do this, and is still one of the best performance wise. I generally prefer plextor myself, and they have an excellent 708A drive now that also writes to all dvd media. Their are others, but those 2 are the only ones i remember by heart and recommend to others. They are more expensive than a regular dvd-r or dvd+r drive, but I think the incredible performance, speed, and compatibility are worth the premium in the end, plus you never have to worry about which standard you are using or which one wins in the end.
