Humming Speakers

I recently bought Logitech 2.1 ch speakers system, and plugged it into a socket and turned it on (without even connecting the other wires connecting the speakers or the computer in) -- there was a low humming noise. When I do plug everything else in, the humming noise intensifies significantly and if I start playing music, music comes out of the speakers but the humming noise is so loud that you can hear it above the music.
Could someone tell me what's going on....and how to rectify the problem.

Try another power source.
It sounds like that outlet may have a bad ground.
It could also just be a bad set of speakers however.
