HP1740 Powers Up>Then Blank Display

Comment:
Got a HP 1740 17" monitor here that when you turn the PC on, the display comes on for a few seconds during the POST screen, then goes off, comes back on while the Windows XP loading screen is on, and then goes off...then when the Windows GUI appears the display appears again for a few seconds before going blank again...all the while the green power light remains on.
If you press the power button off and then back on the display appears then goes after a second or so
I have tried on different PCs and different Power cables and VGA & DVI cables etc.
Was wondering about dismantling and if anyone had any advice on what to look for?

Just a guess! Boot up in safe mode. If it works ok, reduce the resolution and refresh rate to see if it helps.

thanks aegis but that doesnt work because it happens at post and in the bios screen...
Ive tried quickly pressing the "auto" button on the front to try and make it set itself to a suitable resolution it can use, but it still goes off before it finishes resizing

Did you actually try what aegis suggested? Your computer is attempting to boot to Windows. It is past the POST portion of the startup. Try continously tapping F6 as soon as you start the computer. You should get some choices. You can try last known good configuration or Safe Mode.

yes...I did try this...but I cant see any choices because the screen has already gone blank by this time...
I have tried booting the PC with a working screen and after selecting safe mode, and then being in safe mode plugged in the screen...same problem occurred.

Your back light inverter board has some bad capacitors..... Easy to replace, just look for caps that have a domed top. Good caps will not be domed on the top. You can pick up the replacement caps at any electronics store......
