Like you, I was under the impression that you could not...

I own a pavilion 8870, and was thinking of upgrading until I read somewhere that ME was the only OS that would work.

Go figure..?

My system specs are HP pavillion win ME/2Kpro/XPpro.
I have 2 hard drives, 512mb pc 133 memory and I upgraded my processor from 733 celeron to 866mhz pent3.
I have 2 pavilions and run multiple systems on both. If you check on the HP website, it will have drivers for other versions of windows as well as bios updates;

http://h20015.www2.hp.com/en/softwareCategory.jhtml?lc=en&pagetype=software&prodId=hppavilion81921&sw_lang=en

XP drivers are not listed for your computer, but that doesn't mean you can't upgrade. Usually if the drivers are not listed, they will load from the CD or be available when you run windows update. Many of the drivers will work for 2000/XP. The HP computers are much more adaptable than people say. It's the processors and memory that are limited as the motherboards tend to be cheap.

The 8870 has drivers listed for XP;

http://h20015.www2.hp.com/en/softwareCategory.jhtml?lc=en&pagetype=software&prodId=hppavilion28625&sw_lang=en&Submit.y=6&Submit.x=6

My computers run much better with 2000 and XP than they ever did with ME.

I hope that this helps you with your decision.

These are your product specs;

I suggest that you upgrade your memory to at least 256 as the 64mb that came with your computer will run xp really slow. Mine was already slow at 128.
