Subject: HP Printer Will Not InstallOS: Win98 SECPU/Ram: P3 733/ 128MBManufacturer/Model: HP Vectra VL400 |
Comment: I'm trying to install my HP printer. I loaded the CD driver and went throught the steps, and when everything finished, I couldn't click on "properties" to set my printing preferences, and there was no print button. So what I'm trying to do now is remove everything to install it again. The uninstaller doesn't work, so I just manually removed everything in windows explorer and using the remove function in device manager. Now when I double click on the D drive to install it again, I get a message that says "the installer has detected that you have already completed installation of this software" but there's no more trace of the HP printer in my computer now. Any ideas?

Reply: (edit)Either you didn't remove all the files and/or folders or the registry entries are preventing the reinstallation. If it hasn't been too long since you did the installation you might try restoring a previous registry. Start up the PC. Before the OS starts to load start tapping F8. Choose 'command prompt only' from the boot menu. At the c:\> prompt type scanreg/restore and enter. Choose a registry to restore with a date that precedes the installation.

Reply: (edit)Hopefully DAVEINCAPS suggestion will get you back to where you started. If however that doesn't help I suggest you run a registry cleaner to find the reminents of the HP install. A very good one for your purposes is JV Powertools. Find the last freeware version of this program here: http://www.321download.com/LastFree... Unless you are very sure about it, don't remove any entries unless the program states they are safe to remove. Sort by color, green are safe to remove. Use your discretion about any entry referring to HP that isn't green. Reformatting is rather severe and would be a last resort.

Reply: (edit)What I did was just reformat the computer and install the printer again. This time it got installed correctly. One thing though, if I try to print after opening a file from the 3.5 disk drive, it gives me a message that says to set the default printer from the control panel. But in the printers folder the HP printer is set as the default printer. If I copy that same file to the desktop and open it from there and then print it, then it works fine. No big deal since all I have to do is copy any file from the floppy disk to the desktop and then print it that way but if someone knows a quick fix please let me know.
