Comment: I have a friend with an hp pavilion xt936 and a tech told him it needed a new motherboard. It was my think that these systems needed the hp motherboard because they were proprietary systems and an off the shelf mb would not work. Is this right?

Reply: (edit)You are Oh! So right! All HP computers have are proprietary everything. My suggestion, don't bother buying another HP! Build a generic computer you can update and replace the parts with. I recently had to tell a guy to ditch an HP computer just because his hard disk went out. HP puts a SECRET recovery partition on the hard disk...and refuses to sell or provide recovery disks or mb drivers...now you tell me HOW SMART it is to put a recovery partition on a hard disk which has crashed and burned! Replacing the HD is not a problem, it is getting the MOTHERBOARD DRIVERS...which HP will not provide to you! LOL! Only people without a brain buy a computer like this from a company that has no brain but deep pockets...build a generic computer...that is what I do, built lots of them, and I don't have HP around telling me, I have to buy a whole new computer because their stupid hd crashed!
