HP pavilion memory upgrade Help

I purchased a 512mb/pc133 sd memory stick for my system. my system is not reading that it is installed. i have tried booting up with just the 512mb stick and all the computer does is beeps and then i get nothing on my monitor. what can i do to fix this problem??

You should have done your homework BEFORE buying any memory. Your Pavilion is upgradeable to a max of 512MB, but only accepts a max of 256MB per slot. This is no way to "fix this problem"...you have the wrong RAM.

If you go to crucial.com and look up your HP model, they indicate that the max memory is 512mbs and the max per slot is 256mbs.
Probably the problem.

my next question for someone is where in my system can i find the max. memory that i can use say if im working on a friends computer and they purchased their computer from say barebones or some place that sells pc build kits and the make and model isnt on crucial.com??

Just take a look at the make/model number printed on the motherboard and google it.
