The HP Officejet V40 (a.k.a. "All-in-one") multi-function device was one of our best decisions. With one device, we are able to scan, print, fax and copy -- in color or b&w. This small, lightweight device takes up far less room than the printer and scanner devices it replaces. We purchased this device at BestBuy's on-line store (not available in-store at this price) for $ 150 USD + S&H in April 2003.PROS:
Cheap; Space saver; Quality product; Comes with FREE Optical Character Reader (OCR) software from Readiris; Can send faxes directly from PC, even scheduled at a future date/time; From this device, you can control to which PC application a scanned photo/document is delivered.CONS:
1. Lost use of our highly-used flatbed scanner (disables other similar-task devices when installed on same system), Expensive ink cartridges ($65+ USD). Even though this new device scans well, there's nothing like a flatbed scanner for professional-grade scans.2. We had trouble getting it to work properly with Win2000. When the device was turned on or off, it would cause the PC to immediately reboot. We could only resolve this by disabling "Automatically Reboot" in the System Failure area under Startup & Recovery options of Win2k (My Computer, Properties, Advanced, Startup & Recovery).
3. The device has a pre-set list of PC applications to which you can deliver a scanned photo/document - it would be great if user could modify that list of applications.
Overall, at this price, it's a great buy for your home and/or office use.
