HP laptop intermittent error, boot device not found...

January 27, 2012 at 18:50:54
Specs: Windows Vista, dual core pentium
HP series A900 (actual model A945US). When booting up it displays a message "boot device not found". I have flashed the bios and re-installed sata controller drivers. I also did a fresh install of windows 7. The hard drive surprisingly responds during the windows 7 fresh install. PC runs great for a while, but when I wake it from being asleep, it decides to restart by itself to the black screen with the above message. I have also removed the hard drive, cleaned the contacts and re-installed. At some point it does boot and start windows and runs good again for a while. But it seems to take many many restarts to get it to see the hard drive and start windows. I did notice something in the hard drive test. It starts the hard drive test and finishes with a status of "passed", but yet the percentage counter stays at zero , 00%. Any suggestions will be appreciated.
Thank you,

Can't tell what is it. Bios to hard drive or any part in between could be the fault.

Not even sure what the best way to go is. Maybe change the bios battery.

Also I even hate to suggest it but in some rare cases a bios re-flash may help but use that at the very last resort.

Use hard drive diags from the hard drive makers OEM site for best results.

Hi Jefro, thank you for your response. I actually did flash the bios to a later version that was available from hp, but still the same reaction. I took the whole thing part to check any obvious visible defects and still nothing. I didn't think about the battery. I will try that even though everything works and system boots to a "windows on cd". This one has my head spinning. It actually decided to start up while it was all apart, loaded windows with no issues, but when I restarted, back to same issue. Seems like a motherboard problem, but I just don't understand how it starts up ok one out of 10 or 20 tries.
Thanks again,
