There are viruses that give all kinds of fake error messages about the condition of your computer......But if this error comes up when the laptop is first turned on, then it may be it is failing. If you get this error after windows has loaded up maybe not. The hard drive can be tested, but before I even tested it.........I would try retrieving the data off the hard drive if you have important stuff not backed up. If you are not technically skilled enough to do this, have someone who is do it. Then you can download a hard drive tester like Seatools by Seagate and test the hard-drive....if it passed a long generic test....maybe a software issue, but if it failed....time for a new. But if this computer no longer boots into windows or takes several attempts, stop!, get the data first!!!

If you have nothing of value in the way of data on the hard drive. Download seatools for dos make a bootable cd from the iso....boot to the cd and do the short and long generic test on the hard drive. If it fails....time for a new one. If it passes, perhaps a virus or a a real flukey drive that still passes tests but none the less.......done. happens sometimes. Alternatively, if you can see what make of hard-drive(it says toshiba, but I'd look) and download the hard disk drive test the manufacturer will have on their website.

Thank you so much for your answer, my computer when you turn the power on gives me a black screen with white printing on it asking if you want to start windows in safe mode press enter...... i do this and windows will load fine. it also tells me that i have a hard drive error and to go to a web site....... the computer will work fine after it has loaded but every now and then a message will pop up asking me to backup all of my work, I have also restored the computer to its original factory settings and re loaded microsoft office, but when you start the computer it still gives me the same message.

Toshiba have a Hard Drive Diagnostic Software Tool this will test the state of the Hard Drive, re-installing Windows is not a Repair Feature to be recommended:

Googling is quicker than waiting for an answer....

I would run the diagnostic provided link Jolicloud, just for peace of mind, and I would download, update and run something like malwarebytes to rid yourself of any pests.
