Comment: I recently reformatted a Hewlett Packard ze1210 notebook and install win2k. All i need is to get this DVD+CDRW combo to work, the drive itself works because i installed 2k off of it, but when i boot it doesnt show in my computer. In hardware manager it says "the registry may be currupt" under the drive but i highly doubt that. i have looked EVERYWHERE for these drivers for the dvd/cdrw for the ze1210. if anyone knows where i can get this PLEASE HELP. OR if you have a link to a recovery cd for ze1000 series plz plz plzzz HELP

Reply: (edit)i see the link but is that not just an update for a program? i can't even get my combo drive recognized correctly in my device manager, when i add it i get a Toshiba dvdrom, which makes even less sense. I'm pretty sure its a QSI SBW-081 combo drive

Reply: (edit)You need to get it recognized in the BIOS properly first. HPs BIOS selections can be mystifying. When in the BIOS disable quick boot. This will allow you to view the hardware being recognized by the BIOS. I wouldn't worry too much about how it is called. Download a utility called AIDA32. This program will identify your hardware. HP didn't make that drive, so it probably will come up as something different. If the BIOS isn't IDing the drive try changing the settings from auto to CD or DVD or removable storage device, whatever works. I noticed that you are running win2000. Do you have all the service packs? Win2000 was designed as a business OS, so it doesn't necessarily ID all hardware. Hardware that wasn't considered "business hardware" sometimes isn't IDed. You could check with MS on wheather your version of win2000 supports your hardware. Each SP brought 2000 closer to XP. Each service pack has a readme online that states what that SP does. If you download SP4 it is culimalitive. There are just a few updates after that. SP4 is the final SP according to MS. I would recommend that you DL it.

Reply: (edit)okay, i made sure to get all windows updates including sp4. the bios on this laptop is very, very limited, i can only edit date/time, and boot sequence, thats it. but the bios does detect my cdrom as a Toshiba dvd player, but i dont know why it wont come up in my computer. any idea why it would say the "registry is currupt" under the dvd drive?

Reply: (edit)Look in device manager at harddisk contollers and post what is there. I assume there is no entry for any CD or DVD drives in device manager. Try running regclean. It may correct the problem. Get it here: http://download.com.com/3000-2094-881470.html?tag=list

(Code 19) Click Troubleshooter to start the troubleshooter for this device i ran the troubleshooter and followed the registry steps exactly. that still didnt work, and i ran regclean and it did not fix it either :-\

Reply: (edit)Try removing the drive from device manager and re-booting. Do you have a floppy drive? Does the floppy use the same drive bay? Does the floppy work? Has the combo drive ever worked for you?

Reply: (edit)I would check on Microsoft Knowledge Base for further info on this issue. It is possible that Win2000 doesn't support that piece of hardware. Maybe there is a workaround. WinXP is built on the same basic NT kernal so maybe the registry can be modified to identify this hardware. If so, that is out of my realm. I would try the Knowledge base, or the Win2000 forum here, first.
