Subject: hp desktop freezes at logo screen
OS: WINXP
CPU/Ram: 2.4/512MB
Manufacturer/Model: HP
Comment:

I am getting ready to pull my last few hairs with this problem…..

I have a HP desktop running windows xp (p4 2.4, 512MB Ram, 80GB HD) and when I power on the computer, it freezes on the HP logo screen. I sometimes can get into the BIOS, however, most of the time I cant even do that.

I decided to open the case and reset the cmos battery, pull memory, ect. and I was able to get the computer back up and running Windows. The computer ran perfect until the next morning when I went to turn it on. The problem was back.

I repeated the steps that I did before and it worked again, however, the problem came back again.

This computer just went out of warranty a few weeks ago and Hp will not help.

If you can help, please respond to this post. I would greatly appreciate any help that you may have to offer.

It appears from your post and the cmos battery works ,then don't work. You may need a new cmos battery.

Well.I assume it's clean inside and you checked everthing visibly.Try another free four pin power connector, from power supply to hard drive. If that isn't the solution,It is probably a weakening power supply.

I have tested the power supply and all of the voltages are correct. Whats so odd about this is that it freezes at the HP logo screen, before windows even thinks of loading

long time ago I repaired my friends HP desktop. It wont boot just frozen at logo screen.
He had replaced ps2 mouse to usb mouse. That was the problem, Some HP (low quality) motherboard wont boot without ps2 mouse. May be you have the same problem and try to replace with a new ps2 mouse. Good luck!

DONL,
you may be on to something there. I have set up the pc on another monitor and a different keyboard and mouse(ps2) and it has not froze yet..........let me say again....yet.

Does anyone else know what may cause the HP to freeze at the logo screen??

A bios upgrade may have USB support.I am against bios upgrades unless they are a absolute neccessity. They don't always come out right.Bios upgrade is your last fix.

Your motherboard may have software upgrades that are not installed.
