Reply: (edit)Is the printer on USB or parrallel cable? Just go to the control panel, click on printers, right click on your printer, left click on properties and then left click on new driver and let XP find it. XP has the drivers for most any driver anymore. If that doesn't work, go to the HP website and find the up-dated driver Hopefully my advice will help you...Please post back with your results....thanks

Reply: (edit)So, just to clarify: You've download the exe file from the HP website, and then you double-click on it to open it and start to install the software. Is that correct? Life is more painless for those who are brainless.

Reply: (edit)This may not be what you're experiencing, but when running the download it will expand the files to a temporary folder on the drive from which the file is being run. This is just fine if the file is on your hard drive. But if you burned the file to a cd and run it from there you'll get an 'unable to create folder' error (or something similar) because the cd is read-only and it can't create a folder there. The solution of course is to copy the file from the cd to the hard drive and run it from there. I've had that experience installing various HP printer drivers on 98 and assume it's true for XP also.

Reply: (edit)removed adware and spyware by adaware se nothing got changed... There is no printer in the control panel, because the printer is not installed yet, i want to install it... I start the driver from the harddisk, I don't have it on a cd... Yes I downloaded all files I found, even the basic version, but in the basic version there is an other problem: Nothing happens... I open the install file, a folder is created but there is no file i can run... nearly all files end with *.ex_ or *.dl_ Is this problem? With the full version 840-enu-xp.exe In the folder I tryied the change the ending from *.ex_ to *.exe and also *.dl_ to *.dll I know the problem is really difficult... Hopefully someone knows the solution...

Reply: (edit)It doesn't hurt to run malware scans but this doesn't seem like a situation caused by them. The problem seems to be the extraction is depositing the files where they can't be found. I'm still not exactly clear on what it's saying but I think this: Verknupfung konnte nicht erstellt werden. Das Ziel. . . (file location). . .fur die Verknupfung konnte nicht gefunden werden. may be relevent. What's the general translation of that?

Reply: (edit)Then maybe XP has native support for the printer. Can you manually add it by going through PRINTERS--ADD PRINTER? Or maybe you've got a bad cable or incorrect port settings?

Reply: (edit)Apparently that printer supports both USB and parallel connections. If you're using parallel, make sure the port settings are correct in cmos/bios setup and the port shows properly in device manager.
