HP deskjet 6400 is printing output that is skewed by about 1/4 inch.

Sounds like one (or more) of your rubber paper rollers are worn.

Thanks, you could be right. Any way to replace (or even try cleaning) the rollers? Or is this probably a death knell for the printer?

Yes, you can replace the rollers in those, sold usually in what is called a "roller kit." Can be inexpensive if you are mechanically inclined and can do it yourself, but having it done by a printer tech can be cost prohibitive.
