Hello everyone.
I own an HP Deskjet 612c printer that is about 4 years old. I have recently switched froim my old computer (win 98) to my new one (win xp). It has been working fine until recently. Now, whenever I try to print anything, a message pops up and says "Document failed to print" and the paper feed light flashes. The first time I try to print something, the printer picks up a piece of paper, and then stops (the error message shows then). After the first time, nothing happens at all. I have tried printing from many different programs: Wordpad, Notepad, Photoshop, MS Word Processor, directly from the web. None of them work. I have also gone through the built-in troubleshooter that comes with windows XP. I have replaced my cable, but it still doesn't work. I have cleaned the contacts, and my ink cartidges are not expired. Quite frankly, I don't know what to do--which is precisely why I'm psting here.
This happened at the worse possible time; school starts in a few days and I have AP essays and vocabulary stuff to print out--a total of maybe 40 papers. Consequently, any help at all would be much appreciated. Thanks a lot!

printers are really cheap today.
it might be best to upgrade. mixing old technology with new sometimes creates pesky problems.
try a system restore back a few days when the printer ran okay.

A system restore will not help what is obviously a hardware problem with the printer. As uppercrust points out there are inexpensive printers available. The 612 series was not planned as a long term unit. They were low priced and not what I felt were as durable. A tech I know made a comment that you can get cheap printers now that are cheaper than the cartridges you put in them.
Good luckRichard

Hey,
XP is supposed to have the drivers for that already. I have one of those too.
Try going to add new hardware and let it find it again.
It should work then.

I have a friend with the exact same problem except on Win98SE. I also tried it on my Win XP notebook with the same results. My guess is it's a printer hardware issue. I told my friend I saw an Epson C84 at BJ's for $99 with a $40 or $50 dollar rebate. That price is less than the price of the HP cartridges with much better quality. Time to update printers.

Hey,
I do have to agree with Dan.
The only reason I use it is because I had a few left over cartridges.
It is very slow too and makes the computer slow down while printing.
When these cartridges are gone the printer will be too.
I have a Lex Z25 still in the box waiting for this to happen.
It came free with a computer but you can get one of those for about 30-40 bucks.

Did you recently install Windows XP Service pack? I have the same problem and suspect this is the reason.

Funny...I figured it out...somehow my print settings were changed to color printing....change them back to black printing and see if this fixes your problem too!
