My HP deskjet 3820 will not work with USB. It will start to print, stop, and give the message:

There was an error writing to USB/DeskJet_3820/CN28D1R00Z18 for the printer (hp deskjet 3820USB):
The printer is not ready. Make sure it is turned on and online
To continue printing, click retry.
Windows will automatically retry after 5 seconds.

if I hit retry (or wait) it will usually print a bit more then stop. A lot of the time when it attempts to retry it will print out garbage.

I tried reinstalling drivers, using the newest drivers, and it still won't work. It is plugged directly into the computer's USB port (not through a hub) it is the only device attached to the computer at the time.

This happens with local or network print jobs.

Have you tried a different USB cable? Can the USB interface drive something else successfully?

No.

It is only after a certain amout of data it seems that it stalls. So if it is draft text it can print a few pages before stalling, while a photo it would be after several drives.

I've used a USB mouse, joystick and two digital cameras on this computer.

Nothing other than the printer is plugged in when trying to print.

I think the problem is with Kodak's camera drivers. I disabled them for startup and now the HP problems go away, and I can load the kodak software only when needed.

Which kodak camera?? I have the EZ200 by kodak. No problems, though I normally don't have it plugged in.

I am using 98se. and no printing problems with my 3820.
