hi, i have just brought an external HP cd-writer 8230e, the problem is that when i plug in the USB cable into the port the ADD/ REMOVE PROGRAMS doesn't automatically appear as it's ment to....
i've tried ADD/ REMOVE PROGRAMS manually but doesn't seem to recognise it's there, i've downloaded the latest driver from HP which works fine, but when in to the program provided, it say's that it doesn't recognise any cd-writer there.....
i tried the burner on another computer and it seemed to recognise it fine, so i'm guessing that the USB port that were using isn't enabled via BIOS.....
Could any one suggest something that may help me to get this working please... Maybe which bios setting to change so it's enabled..
thanks for your help :)

Just a thought right, but my guess is that youve got windows 98 and that it may not have this function where it automatically pops up, also check the box of the CD Writer and see what Operating Systems it supports? Strong feeling is that the Win 98 does not support your CD Writer.

Why are you looking in Add/Remove Programs?
You added hardware not a program. Of course it's not going to show up there. You need to look in Device Manager.

Also you should check your device manager USB controller. If its Via or Intel then you should manually switch it to Universal. This usually fixes this problem.
