Specs: Windows 7, 3.0ghz
Good Day,

I have this HP 620 laptop which has windows 7 installed on it. The laptop went thru the whole installation process fine. The problem started about two days ago. The laptop would start booting up and would suddenly just go off in the middle of starting up. I have tried the battery testing method, factory resetting the laptop. When it does show some signs of life, it would allow me to go as far as the window which indicates that windows has a problem would you like to launch the repair tool or start windows normally. I allow it to select the repair tool but when it get to zero seconds the time just starts all over again, until I select it myself and in this case the laptop just goes off. The on time is becoming shorter and shorter. Now it won't even allow me get this far. What could be causing this, hard-drive, power supply, motherboard, bad windows installation. Tried doing some searches online, no success. Your help is desperately sought in this matter.

Thank you very much for your kind assistance.

Yours kindly
Roger Fontenelle

"tried the battery testing method"
Not sure what you mean.

Do you mean this sequence, which is always worth a try?:
Turn off laptop, remove power, remove battery, hold Power Off/On down for about 20 seconds to discharge the motherboard components. Re-assemble and hope you are lucky - it works at odd times.

Otherwise there are many possibilities but as it is getting worse it sounds like hardware. Make sure the case vents are clean in case it is overheating.

Is the battery charging?

Is it the same when running from the battery alone?

Did you do anything immediately before this happened?

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

The only reason the Windows repair screen is coming up is because the system has shutdown numerous times in the middle of booting. It appears to be a hardware problem, not a Windows problem. Do NOT attempt to reinstall Windows.

Looks like you battery is draning more and more after every restart.
Does the laptop work with charger only? (take out the battery)

I have done all the above suggestions. I took another approach to it. I removed th hard drive and used another one from my lap top. Was able to install windows 8 on it. In the mean time while I was doing this I placed my good working hard drive in the laptop HP620 and it started up right away. It even stayed on the entire time I was installing windows on the other hard drive. Placed it back in the HP 620 it started fine, worked well on the battery and power cord. Brought it back for my buddy, started doing the same thing immediately. What I have noticed is that the power light indicator when plugged in thru power cord does not remain lit, once I plug the cord in it just blinks and goes off. Even with the battery charging it remains off. To the best of my knowledge that light is supposed to remain while charging and when in use thru the cord. I have Compaq Presario CQ61 and the light remains on thru all processes including charging and normal use. I am thinking a power problem on the motherboard. Anothe thinh when the laptop got fixed for the short while it was working fine, I observed that if there is anything plugged in the usb port like a phone or external usb fan which I had plugged in would remain on for about a min after the laptop is switched off.Any thoughts on this.

Thanks again

By any chance do you have access to another power cord?

Is there an electronics shop that you could take the laptop into just to test it on an equivalent power cord / supply?

Usually, if a computer/laptop begins to turn on, but then turns off, there is something wrong with the power supply. This will have to be replaced and I would recommend having a technician fixing this problem.
