HP 510 constant beep, won't pass startup mode

Hewlett-packard / 510

Specs: Windows XP, Celeron M 1.4GHz/ 1GB DDR2 RAM
HP 510 laptop boots to the windows screen, asks which mode to start in (safe mode, last known good configuration, or normal mode). From here, safe mode runs a bunch of "partition x, file x" checks in dos mode; normal mode brings up the windows icon w/ the green "booting" bar below it. Then, a series of short beeps so close together they sound like one continuous beep. Will not continue to load. Only ay to stop it is to hold power until it shuts down. Tried re-seating the RAM & the video card. Didn't help. Re-seated the battery. Blew out the fan/heat sink w/ compressed air. Now I can't figure out what else to do to make it work again.

There is an error on the hard drive. Probably includes a driver in this error.
chkdsk C: /F
at a dos prompt. May have to update drivers

Shoot. Thanks for the speedy reply! Unfortunately, I can't get to a DOS prompt. I did just learn, however, that if I push the little switch (the one that tells the computer the screen is down) it momentarily stops beeping, gives 1 higher pitched beep, and then continues to beep again. I'm about ready to just give up & fix my wife's other computer! Things like this keep happening to her computer for some reason, so I don't want her to start using my macbook pro for fear something might happen to that one too...haha.
