I know for a fact that Win 98 is very particular about installing printers. Be sure to plug in the serial or USB cable when it requests you to do so.

Another thought just came to mind. Upgrade Win 98 to the newest service pack that is available, then try installing the printer again. I don't think that the automatic updates will work anymore for Win 98, but you should be able to find the service pack at www.microsoft.com. Let me know if this helps.

98 doesn't have any official service packs. There are some updates that fix specific problems but none I can think of that would affect the installation of a printer.

As already mentioned, follow the installation instructions that will be on the HP download page.

I've noticed when you download printer drivers from HP, that download must be run from the hard drive. That is, if you download and burn it to a cd you will need to copy it back to the hard drive and then run it. That's because the installation file will attempt to create a temporary directory on whatever drive it's installing from and of course it can't do that on a cd.

You won't have that problem when using the original cd since it 'knows' you're installing from cd.

So, assuming all the above checks out, what exactly happens when you attempt the install? Does it not even start the installation? Do you get an error while doing the install? Does the install complete but the printer doesn't work?
