I suggest this. You evidently DON'T have any backups in place. Instead of transferring any data, back it up and then use the backups to copy to the laptop.
You should ALWAYS maintain at least TWO copies of any data you wish to keep. That even goes for your program CDs. Make a copy and install using the copy.
Recovering data is one of the most common issues posted on this forum.
If you just bought a laptop then be sure to make the recovery disk set NOW. Before anything else. Same goes for the old computer. It is worth more if there is an operating system available.
