Can we assume you've tried this already?:

What happens when you start the computer and how far do you get?

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

I have already tried the F9 solution without success. I have no control at the moment because last night a virus visited me. It offers to send me a free version of windows 8. Naturally I did not click to open it, but it has restricted any use of the keyboard. If I am able to recover the original software it will get rid of the virus. I did try moving progressively through all of the F keys and none worked.

It is 1 a.m. and I am going downstairs to try it.

Best wishes

Rather than going to the extreme of wiping out the OS & losing all your data & programs, how about booting off a rescue disk & wiping out the virus? Here's a couple of possibilities:

Reply for Riider.

For decades I have kept my own data separate to the OS. By keeping up to date mages it is merely a matter of restoring the OS without touching the private data.

I now suspect that there is some oddity in the ASUS which prevents installation of Acronis True Image. For two days I have done nothing but try to install it.

I am sorry to have not left a mention about accessing the BIOS; I did manage to interrupt the POST by holding down F2 first and then pressing the power button. Ten I found that something else was wrong.
